JAMMU, June 28: Owing to mismanagement of the Shree Maharaja Gulab Singh (SMGS) Hospital, Blood Bank's staff, about 60 units (350 or 375 ML in per unit) of blood and 40 to 50 unit of Fresh Frozen Plasma are ready to be discarded by the officials as it has passed its use-by date reportedly.
Here it needs to be mentioned that several deaths can be caused due to severe blood loss in case there is a shortage of blood, plasma, or platelets.
Over the past few years, there has been wastage of blood but who cares? Many times it is seen that people face severe hardship in arranging blood for their patients as most of the times they are denied blood from the blood banks and asked to arrange it on their own.
Blood is precious for life and the same cannot be manufactured, it can be donated by a donor but unfortunately, the Government Medical College Jammu and its associated hospitals discard a huge quantity of blood and its components.
Senior doctor, seeking anonymity told Early Times that it was not the first time when the concerned staff were going to drain the blood and its components, numbers of similar cases have been reported for last many years with impunity but no one has shown interest to save or provide blood during emergency cases.
"A month ago a child died in SMGS Hospital Jammu due to denial of blood despite availability of some units, following a committee was constituted by the then House Committee but no action has been taken so far".
The doctor said that instead of providing blood to needy patients, the blood bank of SMGS hospital is ready to drain the blood as it has passed its use date. "You can see in the pictures, numbers of blood bags (60 to 70 bags) and 40 to 50 bags of Fresh Frozen Plasma bags have been kept in a room for destroying, "the doctor claimed and adding that the blood bags cloud have saved numbers of lives but concern has proffered to waste allegedly. It reflects that the blood banks have enough blood units to go down into the drain but don't have needy patients.
He further said what is distressing fact that while blood bank is created to ensure instant blood to patients particularly during emergencies, family members have to often run helter-skelter to get blood for their loved one who may be battling between life and death. "Some days back, my junior, who was working day and night to save the life the mother and her child, asked to provide blood as it was an emergency, they denied by saying that 'if we gave all stock to you, where will we get blood for others', doctors narrated.
He further added that every two seconds somebody needs blood and in many cases, people lose their lives because of lack of donor blood every day. While one bag of blood can save the life, about 6 lakh litres of blood is wasted as per last year in India
