No funds for Jammu hospitals' Security, Sanitation

Jammu, Apr 7: The J&K government has not released funds for Government Medical College and Hospital and its associated hospitals' security for 2018-19.
However, the administration claims that Special Police Officers (SPO) of the police department would be deployed to deal and monitor the situation of the GMC Jammu.
Presently, security of the GMC Jammu and its associated hospitals is outsourced to a private firm for last many years. The administration has, however, failed to clear liabilities due to the shortage of funds.
Sources told Early Times that the state government did not allocate funds. Also, there is no nod to the administration to outsource the hospitals' security and sanitation work this year.
"Bills of the private firm amounting to Rs 9 lakh are pending with GMC Jammu. Now, not allocating funds for the security head will create hurdles for hospitals' functioning," said sources.
Sources said not only GMC Jammu but its associated hospitals would also be affected in coming days as they do not have any substitute to security issue.
Either the concerned department should bat for appointing SPOs as soon as possible or ask for releasing funds for existing security so that working of the hospitals would not be affected, said sources.
An official at GMC Jammu, seeking anonymity, said that more than 50 security guards are working in GMC alone. But they fail to deal with the situation.
Since the private security guards were deployed at various wards, including the emergency ward, and the hospitals' gate, they did not perform their job efficiently. "A number of complaints were received against them on daily basis," an official said.
When contacted, Medical Superintendent, GMC Jammu, Dr. Dara Singh confirmed that no permission was given to outsource security and sanitation job.
"We are about to hire SPOs so that the functioning of the hospital would not be affected," Dr Singh added.
