Traffic police a failure to control use of illegal Red Beacon lights

JAMMU, Oct 26: Despite starting a drive against illegal use of Red Beacon lights on private vehicles, they can still be seen on the vehicles in the city, in violation of the norms.

The Traffic Police had started the drive on October 1 throughout Jammu region, after allegation that some private individuals are violating the rules, set by the government.

It is pertinent to mention here that those who have been authorized to use red beacon lights on their vehicles include the Governor, Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, Speaker, Legislative Assembly, Chairman Legislative Council, Chief Justice of J&K High Court, Cabinet Ministers, Ministers of State, Leader of Opposition in the House and other “dignitaries and high-level officials.

Source said "Strict action will be initiated against the defaulters misusing the red beacon lights under Motor Vehicle Act as law is supreme and should be honoured by every citizen in all its forms by traffic police. But the drive only eyes wash because many unauthorized misusing the red beacon lights in the city. However, the officials of traffic police are not taking strict action in this regard.

“The Red Beacon lights vehicles being provided to the VIPs of the state government are being blatantly misused by their kith and kin. It seems that by the virtue of VIPs being their blood relations automatically turn out to be VVIP, “he added.

Official’s source said that, “the specified dignitaries and officers have been authorized to use beacon lights on the top of their vehicles and anybody violating the directions will be punished under law.” The department has started drive against unauthorized red light.

However, lower-rank officials, retired officials and even office-bearers of different political parties are violating the order with impunity. They also get help of higher-level officials.

When contacted Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Traffic Manmohan Singh said that the, the department has issued order to every official, who deployed on nakkas, removed the unauthorized red becon lights from the vehicles. He also claimed the officials are not excuse to anyone, who running unauthorized beacon light.

He further said that the officials are continuing stop those vehicles and checking the documents, they officials also removed beacon light and charged fine on them.
