Jammu Docs seek blanket ban on private practice but will Health Ministry dare

Nitesh Sangral
JAMMU, Jan 7: Following attachment of Director SKIMS and suspension of other three senior doctors, the medical fraternity of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H) Jammu have sought blanket ban on the all government doctors as many of faculty members are indulged in private practices despite 'restrictions/ban' imposed by the Health Ministry.

"If they (the H&ME ministry) really want to save the primer and precious health institute, they ought to do so and at earliest," some faculty members observed.
Pertinently, the Health and Medical Education Department has issued numbers of orders or circulars in which it was clearly mentioned that the private practice of the Head of departments (HODs) of Medical Colleges and associate hospitals has been banned but due to lackadaisical approach of concerned and poor enforcement by the department, the mal practice is flourishing under government's nose.
A retired doctor, seeking anonymity, told Early Times that the concerned department seems to believe in making rules and guidelines but never thinks about the implementation of the same in true letter and spirits. Taking the benefits the poor enforcement of the department, the doctors of the Medical College Jammu as well as Srinagar have been doing the private practices in violation of rules and without any fear of the department.
Sad part of the story is that now the junior doctors viz. Registrars and Demonstrators too are following the footsteps of the senior faculty doctor and are indulging in this practice reportedly. "Many of them have an alleged nexus with pharmaceutical companies even various clinical laboratories, just because to make easy bucks at the cost of patient care, he said disappointedly.
A group of working doctors slammed the attitude of the concern management and parental department for failing to take action against the violators of the guidelines. It is fact that whosoever is indulged in private practice, he cannot offer timely quality treatment to the patients under the government roofs because he is earning more from private practices as compared to their salaried job. "Does this concerned department has only job to make rules? If yes, then who will monitor whether rules are being implemented or not?
They further questioned, "If it can't monitor then why it wastes time and resources to make guidelines and if these are implemented 'once in blue moon' but the same were bent for the influential doctors time and again..
