JAMMU, Dec 26: In a shocking incident, the premier Government Medical College and Hospital Jammu (GMC&H), refuted to float tenders for supplying of experimental animals' diet for last years and making temporary arrangements to feeding the animals, are being used for experimentation in educational and research of the institution.
Pertinently, the experimental animals used in medical colleges play a crucial role in teaching and researching as well as developing skills for diagnosis. For the research purpose, some rules and regulations have been formed to run the practices hassle free but it seems GMC Jammu is habitual to disobey the rules.
Officials, on the condition of anonymity, told Early Times that what could be expected from the higher officials of the college, if the experiments animals' diet on god mercy as they failed to float tenders for supplying of animals diet for past year. "The tender was supposed to be invited in March to April, but still no efforts are being made by the authorities to make permanent solutions because of allegedly rivalry between former and incumbent principal of the college," officials claimed.
Officials added, in addition, the condition of the animals' house in which they are kept is poor, which is gross violation of the guidelines Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision ofExperiments on Animals (CPCSEA) as well as Animal Welfare Board of India. Despite mandatory for all the colleges to obey the set rules, the incumbent management of GMC doesn't appear in a mood to follow the rules and regulations. Neither, the administration is obeying the rules nor providing timely food to the animals. "Shockingly, they have also not renewed licence of the house due to non-serious attitude of the top brass of Institutional Animal Ethics Committee (IAEC) GMC Jammu," sources said.
"We have nothing to do with that," said veterinary surgeon Divya when the issue discussed with her and she added about the matter ask to the Principal of the College.
Contesting the claims of veterinary surgeon, a senior doctor told that she has been appointed here to look after the experimental animals and she was shifting her responsibility.
