Early Times Report

Jammu, July 31: The administration of Government Medical College and Hospital Jammu is yet to float tenders for supplying animal diet.
The tenders were supposed to be invited in March to April, but due to the rivalry between former and incumbent principal of the college, they could not be done so far. The animals used in medical colleges play a vital role in teaching and research as well as developing skills for diagnosis. For the research purpose, some rules and regulations have been formed to run the practices hassle free.
These rules are mandatory for all the colleges. However, the management of GMC doesn't appear in a mood to follow the rules and regulations.
Sources said the condition of the animals' house in which they are kept is poor, which is gross violation of the guidelines Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals (CPCSEA) as well as Animal Welfare Board of India.
Neither the administration is obeying the rules nor providing timely food to the animals.
"Besides, they have also not renewed licence of the house due to non-serious attitude of the top brass of Institutional Animal Ethics Committee (IAEC) GMC Jammu," sources said.
Member Secretary of IAEC, Dr Brij Mohan Gupta denied being part of the committee. But as per order (no. GMC /17/order/214,) principal of the GMC Jammu had removed HOD Pharmacology from chairman of IAEC GMC Jammu by reconstituting a new committee to take care of animals' house in proper way.
The principal of GMC Jammu is chairman and Dr Brij Mohan Gupta is Member Secretary of the IAEC Jammu.
"I was removed from the post of chairman of the committee," former principal of the GMC, Dr Zahid Gillani said, adding that he doesn't know why tenders are not invited by the administration.

Principal of the GMC, Dr Sunanda Raina was not available for comments.
