Jammu,
June 29: The Government Medical College Jammu did not purchase any medical
journal in the last five years, in sheer violation of the guidelines set by
Medical Council of India.
It
has been made mandatory by the MCI to buy new journals and regularly update
teaching faculty on recent advancements taking place in the field of medical
science.
This
lack of interest in arranging new medical journals is not only affecting the
academics of this institution, but it is also indirectly affecting patient
care.
Principal
of the GMC, Dr Sunanda Raina, admitted that no new journal has been purchased
from 2012-13. She however said the J&K Medical Supplies Corporation (JKMSC)
had to purchase journals, but due to unknown reasons they did not make the
purchase.
When
asked whether medical students and teaching faculty are suffering due to
absence of the journals, Dr Raina said that "everyone has internet
facility and everyone can access the related stuff easily on the net except
paid journals."
GMC lags behind
"Srinagar
colleges and colleges of neighbouring states are improving a lot, but GMC
Jammu is lagging behind.

"We
are in the process to buy the journals as soon as possible," she added.
However,
contradictory the statement of Dr Raina, General Manager of JKMSC Jammu Dr.
Rajindra Kumar Khajuria and GM of JKMSC Kashmir Dr. Mohammed Iqbal Sofi said
that no requisition for medical journals has been received by the Corporation
so far. "We purchase only hospital stationary and we don't have any rate
contract for buying journals," Dr Iqbal said.
Meanwhile,
some PG students of the GMC said that due to absence of latest journals, they
are suffering a lot. "They are forcing us to shift to either GMC Srinagar
or SKIMS Srinagar or other institutes outside the state.
Time
and again the matter has been brought into the notice of chairman of Library
Committee to buy latest journals, but in vain," they said.
"Srinagar
colleges and colleges of neighbouring states are improving a lot, but GMC Jammu
is lagging behind," the students said.
