Early Times Report

JAMMU, Feb 24: The Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H) is once again in limelight but this time over conversion of Chopra Nursing Home into Emergency ward of the hospital.
Pertinently, Sir Col R.N Chopra Nursing Home was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister Dr. FarooqAbdullah with the aim to provide treatment to those who can afford private clinic at reasonable charges compared to other private hospitals in the city.
Number of senior faculty members told Early Times that most of the staff of the hospital are against the step of converting nursing home to emergency ward which was taken by the Health Ministry and believed that the State Health Ministry's decision is completely wrong and goes against the very purpose of establishing the nursing home. They further stated that the although Chopra Nursing Home is generating sufficient revenue but nothing is being spent on the updradation of infrastructure and bringing new technology.
The conversion of Chopra Nursing Home into emergency ward of GMC&H has evoked criticism from the people. According to them, it has defeated the very purpose of the nursing home.
Moreover, the cleanliness in premises is blatantly being ignored thereby patients are being treated in unhygienic conditions.
"Now, administration on the direction of higher ups is merging Chopra Nuring Home into emergency ward without any cabinet approval allegedly, "sources stated, adding that even though the patients admitted in hospital are already not having all medical facilities which they are entitled to quality treatment along with free drugs as shortage of drugs, doctors and overcrowded hospital but now those patients, who can afford the cost, getting better treatment are also being overlooked which potentially defeated the noble idea and compelling them to move in private hospitals in the State and outside the State.
Sources said that it would have been better on the part of Health Department to invest more on the Nursing home by introducing latest technology so that the home will be generated more and more revenue which will boost Health Ministry's exchequer, than converting into emergency ward.
Sources also said that numbers of protests and press conferences were held to stop the conversion but it seems the Government is ignoring the voice of Jammu people who are against the decision.
