Early Times Report

JAMMU, Jan 5: A years after outbreak of deadly swine flu in Jammu and Kashmir, government has failed to procure a laboratory for testing Swine Flu (H1N1) due to tendering intricacies.
It seems the Jammu and Kashmir Health and Medical Education (H&ME) Department has learnt no lesson from deaths of those whose test reports were received from outstation labs after their deaths.
Last year, two patients lost their lives as their test reports which were sent to labs outside the state arrived late; but minister concerned who make tall claims seems to have learnt no lessons as even after the lapse of a year, the crucial diagnostic facilities have not been established.
Sources in State H&ME Department informed Early Times, that after swine flu outbreak in Jammu and Kashmir last years, the Governor as well as High Courts also asked the Department to take necessary steps to establish the Swine Flu (H1N1) testing laboratory at Government Medical College, Jammu as well as an amount of rupees 6.30 Cr has been released in this regard.
"The concerned authority floated tenders for the lab thrice, but due to less participation in the process it was referred to Jammu Kashmir Medical Supplies Corporation (JKMSC).
Sources alleged that the testing lab for Swine Flu (H1N1) in GMC Hospital Jammu has been caught in tender process despite the fact that Swine Flu has already been declared as dreaded droplet infection. "The winter has started and risk of infection has increased but owing to non-serious attitude of the State Health and Medical Department towards the people of the State, the risk has heightened again" they said.
Secures stated that, if the disease spreads like last years, the people have to go outside from Jammu for tests in the absence of a testing laboratory here.
Managing Director of JKMSC Dr Yashpal Sharma when contacted said, the tender for establishing the testing lab has been floated by the JKMSC and it will take three months times to establish the same in GMC Hospital Jammu.
