Jammu, Nov 1: Acute shortage of basic drugs (medicines) in Premier Government Hospitals in Jammu city has exposed claims of Jammu and Kashmir Health and Medical Education department that they are providing free basic drugs to the needy patients.
Pertinently, as Jammu and Kashmir Medical Supplies Corporation Ltd is yet to place order for drugs, premier healthcare institutes in Jammu are facing their acute shortage of drugs. Moreover, the administrators of these institutes are purchasing less quantity of basic drugs on their own and patients are being forced to buy medicines from the markets.
Official sources in Health Department informed Early Times that the main reason for acute shortage of medicine is that for last many years, the drugs were not purchased by JK Health and Medical Department because the department could not take timely decision to purchase essential drugs through JKMSC Ltd.
"At present, the administration of these healthcare institutes is managing on their own and purchasing limited drugs against the requirement due to shortage of funds, "a doctor seeking anonymity informed and alleged that the drugs which are purchased, are made available for VIP patients.
He further said, the stock of medicines in Government hospitals has dried up much to the woes of patients and their families who have to purchase prescribed drugs from outside and the situation will become worse as poor people will be affected most.
Owing to lackadaisical approach of concerned higher ups, doctors and attendants generally enter into altercation over shortage of drugs. "When we try to educate them, they don't listen and directly accuse us", doctor added.
"Few of the attendants of patients have even expressed helplessness over the purchase of certain drugs from outside the hospital," another doctor said, adding, the department had failed to do anything substantial regarding procurement of medicines despite repeated pleas.
