Early Times Report

Jammu, July 6: Panic gripped the premier Super Speciality Hospital here Monday evening following mysterious fire which broke out in CT Scan unit, gutting property worth lakhs and exposing the "faulty" fire management system of the health institute.
Short circuit was believed to be cause of the fire which was brought under control by the fire tenders that were pressed into service. This is the second incident of fire in the hospital and it seems as if the administration of hospital and higher ups have not learnt lesson from the first incident that occurred on November 9, 2014.
The incident took place around 6:30 pm when fire broke in CT scan unit on first floor of the hospital due to short circuit but the fire-fighting systems, which were installed after spending crores of rupees, proved non- functional. Moreover, patients and attendants, who were admitted in the hospital, were seen running from different wards to save themselves. The smoke also gradually spread to the entire hospital. Later, two tenders of Fire Bridge came and controlled the flames.
Talking to Early Times, Superintend of Hospital, Dr Romesh Gupta said the patients were saved and a few patients were shifted to GMCH. He said all Heads of Department (HoDs) had been called and they would monitor the condition of patients. When asked why the fire-fighting system did not work, he refused to comment.
Sources in the hospital raised serious questions on the quality of fire extinguishers and asked for taking the company, which had supplied them, to task.

The hospital is fully equipped with modern fire-fighting system, equipments such as fire-alarms, fire extinguishers and smoke detectors but all proved defunct today.
