Early Times Report

Jammu, June 22: Patients visiting Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Jammu, have to face a lot of inconvenience as X-ray machine of the emergency ward has gone defunct, allegedly due to negligence of the staff concerned.

One of the two X-ray machines in the emergency ward went out of order nearly a week ago, sources told Early Times, adding that the patient load has increased manifold on the other machine. In the absence of X-ray machine, most of the patients have no option but to get their X-ray done at private diagnostic centres. But those who cannot afford to visit private clinics have to wait.

"The machine is lying defunct and neither administration of GMCH Jammu has taken any step to repair nor replaced it," said the sources. They said the emergency section of the hospital needs more X-ray machines to cater to huge patient rush.

A man who has been visiting GMC hospital for the last two days for X-ray said, "I am very poor and cannot afford to visit clinics as they charge huge amount. I belong to the BPL category and X-ray is free for us." He said that all the BPL families in Jammu used to visit GMC. "If the facilities are not available for us, where shall we go? The hospital administration is unmoved."

When contacted, Superintendent of GMC Jammu, Dr. Ravinder Rattan Paul admitted that the machine has been lying defunct. He said he has approached the concerned persons to repair it as soon as possible.
