Water Testing Laboratories have been established out of 50 in Jammu province
till date even as the deadline for the same has expired.
As per PHE data the
department had started work of proposed 50 water testing laboratories in which only
29 has been completed till date and 21 laboratories are still under process.
"In PHE City
Division-I Jammu, there had four testing laboratories to be established but
only has functional and remaining three under process, followed by PHE City
Division-II Jammu, three to be established but only one is fully functional and
remaining two waiting for tender till date," data stated. PHE Rural
Division Jammu, out of three, two have been work under execution and one
waiting for tender. PHE Division Akhnoor, out of three only a functional, one
is waiting for equipments and another's work under execution. Data further
stated that PHE Division Samba, only a functional, construction up to plinth
level and tendering under process of third laboratories. Similarly other
division laboratories also few completed and some under process since the
project has been taken up by PHE department.
Sources informed that Ministry of
Drinking Water and Sanitation, Government of India had issued directions to
Jammu and Kashmir Public Health Engineering (JKPHE) to establish Water Testing
Laboratories at Sub division Level and also made them functional. But after
lapse of nearly one and half year, only three laboratories have been completed
and work on twenty six remaining is on snail's pace.
"The establishment of
Water Testing laboratories at sub division level was made mandatory by Union
government, keeping into consideration the fact that nearly 66 percent of Jammu
and Kashmir population had been consuming contaminated water, "Sources
stated.
Chief Engineer of PHE
department, Sushil Aima, could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.
