Jan 10: The Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) seems to have turned blind eye
towards nuisance created by “Rehris” across the city. These rehris not only
lead to traffic chaos, but also cause hindrance in movement of pedestrians in
busiest areas. There are around 500 to 800 rehris in the city. These rehris
cause traffic jam and sometimes even lead to accidents.
“It’s really very difficult to move on roads especially during the evening hours when rehriwallas are in full swing. They not only cause hindrance to smooth movement of vehicles on road but also create nuisance. Sometime they come to middle of the road to attract customers”, said Raju Singh, a resident of Nai Basti.
Another citizen from Gandhi Nagar Surjit Singh observed that rehris cause problem for pedestrians as footpaths in several areas of the city were occupied by extended encroachments by shops. The carts on roads leave no room for the pedestrians to walk and JMC shall take action against these carts or provide them specific spots to station, he further said.
The MC has not been able to take any action against these carts that are flourishing despite the knowledge of the officials of the Khilafwarzi wing, he lamented. According to sources, the traffic police had proposed the re-location of vendors from congested areas but they opposed the move apprehending business loss.
Due to which the increasing number of street vendors and rehris in Jammu is causing regular traffic jams and more congestion for both vehicles and pedestrians, pushing the traffic issue up the agenda faced by Traffic Department.
