JAMMU, Dec 24: While the New Delhi is simmering with protest against the rape of 23 year old medical student, but looking at the rape graph cases in the Jammu and Kashmir, the figures are shameful reminder that state has failed to curb violence against women.

As per the data, in Jammu district alone nearly 150 incidents of rape have been reported in last four years, which is highest in the list of rape cases and molestation with the women

It an astonishing disclosure, which shows the vulnerability of womenfolk in Jammu and Kashmir, nearly 1336 rape cases have been registered in the state since 2007, in different police stations of the state.

As per the data Jammu district tops the list with 150 incidents, 130 cases were registered in Rajouri. 120 rape cases have taken place in Srinagar in last four years.

It is a matter of concern that most of the victims where below the age of 18 years. It shows that women have become very vulnerable in the state in recent years.

Though the government claims that law has been very stringent against the cases reported , but sources said that in many cases victims are being made to deny the incidents under influence or threat. While the government claims that it is organizing various awareness programs and an effective vigil is being ensured at sensitive locations, where the incidents of rape are high.

There has been a decline in the cases of sexual harassment against women with only 262 cases reported in 2010 as against the 371 of 2009. However 1038 molestation bids have been reported in 2010 as against 972 cases in 2009. Besides, 744 cases related to family homicide and domestic violence has also been reported last year. This includes nine dowry deaths and 211 cases of cruelty by husband or other relatives against women.
