Alarming: 30 per cent rise in cancer cases in Jammu and Kashmir

JAMMU, Dec 19: Nearly 1800 cancer patient have been registered in the Regional Cancer Centre Government Medical College (GMC) Hospital Jammu this year. There has been 20 to 30 per cent rise in the number of patients every year in the state and it is matter of concern.

The hospital data disclosed that in the year 2009 alone the total number of cancer patients who came to RCC to receive treatment was 1,400. An alarming rise as in 2004, the number of new cancer cases in J&K was reported to be at 1,164. As per the data state has been witnessing an increasing number of cancer cases–up from 803 in 1997 to over 1,300 in 2007.

It is further says that the state reported 1,266 cancer cases in 2006, 1,185 in 2005, 1,168 in 2004, 1,058 in 2003. Between 1998 to 2002, the number of cancer cases had jumped around 6.3 per cent–937 in 1998, 901 in 1999, 952 in 2000 and 996 in 2002.

Head of the Centre, Dr Ashutosh Gupta said that there has been 20 to 30 per cent rise in the number of patients every year in the state and it is matter of concern. “ In past over a decade the number of cancer cases have rose alarmingly which is issue of concern and we have to deal with large number of people who are detected with Lung, stomach, throat and cervical cancer”, said Dr Gupta.

He appealed to the state people to treat yourself at earliest, so that your life can be saved. “Don’t smoke as it may cause cancer,” he said.

Official source said that another hand the cancer patient also faced due to the absence of latest treatment facilities means a large number of cancer patients queuing up at the Jammu based centre are left without proper care. Annually, 1,500-2,000 patients register themselves at the RCC, Jammu.

“Expressing serious concern, experts said the cancer mortality rate increased due to some leading behavioral and dietary risks, low fruit and vegetable intake, lack of physical activity, tobacco use and lack of regular check-up. They claimed the changing life style and food habits caused surge in all the cancers especially in Esophagus, Colon and Breast cancers,” he added.
