Jammu,
Dec 11: As the largest telecommunication service provider in the state Bharat
Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) is on a mission to connect people through air and
wire, a gang of thieves is on prowl to disconnect BSNL!
Unidentified robbers have stolen 15 ft telephone communication wire of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) at Amphalla, leaving nearly 1,000 people without landline telephone and Internet connection. This is the fourth incident of such kind in the city.
A VIP colony including the residence of former Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed and some bureaucrats have also been affected by snapping of telecom lines. However, BSNL and police blame each other for the failure to stop repeated thefts of communication wires and equipment in city.
The wire has been stolen nearly the under constructed building of Dental College not only causing hardships to the people but also loss to lakhs of rupees to the telecom giant.
Sources said that in the past authorities have found that a gang of non-local scavengers was involved in stealing wires and they may be again active as wires contain copper, which is a costly metal.
Deputy General Manager (DGM), BSNL Kulbushan Sharma said that they are themselves surprised over the issue and they have informed the police.
“Due to construction work at new building of Dental College, our infrastructure has already been damaged but J&K Project Construction Corporation (JKPCC) has failed to act to save our infrastructure. The theft is matter of concern”, DGM said.
Jammu West Assembly Movement (JWAM) president Sunil Dimple who protested at the spot alleging lack of security in the area said that this is fourth time such a incident has happened.
“This is 4th theft at the same place near Police post Rehari and Dental Hospital Miana Dido Chowk, on BC road in last two months and police has failed to nab the culprits”, Dimple said.
When asked to comment on the theft, DySP Kulbir Handa said, “ We are investigating the issue, but the BSNL has their watchman near the site. I had visited the spot but telecom company needs to give in writing, so that investigation could be launched”, Handa said.
