JMC failing to lift solid waste, residents suffer

Nitesh Sangral
Jammu, November 9: Inaction of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) to lift garbage from various parts of the city is creating major health hazard for the residents.

Its not only the solid waste, but the foul smell creating unpleasant experience for commuters who pass through various localities.

Many of the people alleged that shopkeepers are major contributors of the garbage as some of them lack civic sense and dump their solid waste on roadsides.

However many local residents claimed that dump has created many health problems for the residents. "We daily have to inhale the foul smell which has affected our health. We cannot even eat food properly", said Amit Gupta, a shopkeeper near New Plot. Jammu generates nearly 350 tonnes of garbage daily and it is expected that the there will be tremendous increase in the solid waste generation in next decade.

“As there is shortage of manpower and lack of coordination within the JMC and JDA, it seems there will be no immediate respite from the menace of garbage in the area”, said a regular visitor to the area.

Another resident, Amit Abrol said that JMC is violating the norms. “They are playing with the health of people. What about the tall claims about using modern technology to modernise these sites. It has remained on papers only”.

City already is facing a huge challenge where to dump solid waste generated in the city as JMC has still failed to find the suitable place for the purpose. Few months back, plan to dump it at Kot Bhalwal area was resisted by the people living around the area.

Even a small portion of ground in front Railway Station is being used as a garbage dump, giving an ugly look to the face of Jammu city, visited by lakhs of pilgrims and tourists every year.

“While government has set pilgrim tourism as its main attraction for the state and is projecting the city as the pilgrim town, but most of the people often go back with dirty images on their mind”, said a local resident Ranjit Sharma.
