Banquet halls defy norms for their operation

Nitesh Sangral

JAMMU, Oct 31: Banquet halls continue to defy norms set by the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) as they continue to operate without required facilities.

It is pertinent to mention here that there are near about 114 banquet halls in Jammu region, mostly used for marriage and other social functions. But most of them do not have the required infrastructure, particularly parking space and firefighting equipment.

The J&K High Court had passed clear cut instructions that the running of the Banquet halls with no parking spaced should be seized and put under lock and Key.  Further stated that there would be time limit for DJ’s playing the music.

Source said that the last year the JMC was launched a drive against the illegal functioning of banquet halls and JMC officials also was given clear warned to these halls owner to full fill the requirements and ultimatum to them.

“More than two dozen banquet halls continue to run illegally without the necessary parking space and safety standards.Though the district administration has warned banquet halls and community hall owners not to organise events and functions for which they do not have the licence and facilities, these warnings are being ignored, “he added.

He further said that these days the festival season is going on and also running marriages and parties in the halls but interesting things is that, the vehicles parked on main road. Due to this thing the commuters are facing a long time traffic jams in the city as well as outskirts.

JMC Official said that in the JMC norms for new banquet halls a minimum of 16 kanals are required, which should cover 30 per cent of the total area. There should be parking space for 100 cars and the hall should be well ventilated.

“No one is paying heed to the notices of the corporation and violations are continuing. Worse, even officials don’t seem to be taking the issue seriously any more since many hall owners are politically connected,” said an official.
