Commuters confused by the unexpected directions by signals

JAMMU, Sept 24: Installed with much fanfare, the Traffic lights signals in many locations in the city are giving wrong signals at times to the commuters. The crucial signal timers are not working which creates confusion for commuters in the city. A whopping Rs.2.50 crore were invested to install these lights at 30 locations in the Jammu.

After a long wait, the city got traffic lights in the last few months this year. But the traffic police and commuters are continuing struggling to see the system working smoothly thereby easing the traffic congestion.

Further authorities have still failed to check the back up time of the lights in case of long power cut in the city. Though the officials claims pertinent to mention here that the Traffic department claimed the 8 hour traffic lights “backup” after shutdown power, but interestingly it seems the traffic lights stop working after midnight in different locations in the city.

Official’s source said that company which installed the traffic lights in the state, they had assured the department that the backup of these lights is eight hours in case of power cut, but the department has not checked the claims of the agency.

Sources said that traffic lights have not been made fully functional. Because the some basic work of the traffic light systems are still pending. The department has started due to shortage of time. He also said that the light will take more time to appropriately blinking in the city.

Pertinently, the spectra of confusion are very common at majority of the busy crossings in and around the city and that too during peak hours, particularly at Indira Chowk, Shakuntala Chowk, Bikram Chowk. The traffic mess emerges mainly on two accounts, first lack of awareness and scant respect among the citizens vis-à-vis traffic rules and secondly lacunae in the execution of rules by the traffic authorities, who too in majority of the cases are as ignorant about the laws as those who are supposed to obey the rules.

When contacted, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Traffic, Manmohan Singh said that the backup of traffic lights eight hours, “The lights can blink for eight hours after power cut. He informed that the light backup battery (server) installed with traffic lights in whereas signals installed.

He further said that the traffic personal start start functioning at 8 AM to 9 PM and who violate the traffic rules are immediately fined.

Interestingly, the traffic officials have claimed every traffic signal separate personnel deployed and they do their job efficiently, but reality different to claim some personnel deployed in few place where traffic lights installed. The some motorcyclist are seem continuing ignore the traffic lights and the officials only see but not stopped them.

Though the accused have been arrested by the police while he was fleeing towards Kashmir, but it raises lot of question about the moral degradation of our society, which has long tradition of ‘Guru-Shiysha’ concept.
