JAMMU, Oct 01: While traffic department abolished all the check points from Pathankote to Banihal, to eradicate the Hafta system, which has become a major source of harassment for the drivers, but it seems that private truckers are taking advantage.

The administration had imposed ban on the movement of commercial trucks in the city during the day, but since the Nakas were lifted, drivers are taking advantage of the loophole.

It is pertinent to mention here that on September 28 the Traffic department has decided to abolish all static traffic check points on National High Way from Lakhanpur to Jawahar Tunnel.

Henceforth, there would be no individual traffic checking at the selected static points on the National High Way. The commercials trucks owners are also taking benefits of these rules from two days. These trucks are running in the city without any scared of traffic police.

Officials’ source said that presently no one is checking of commercials vehicles on different locations in the state, in which the truck drivers also taking benefits. They are continuing their trucks in the city at daytime. “It’s true trucks are not permitted to enter city roads between 7am and 11pm”.

People have been saying that transport officials and the motor vehicle department should take a serious look at the violations such trucks commit.

“It seems these huge trucks even stray into the heart of the city during peak hours. The trucks have violated long-vehicle specification rules by not displaying side-line indication. This caused unnecessary roadblock, especially because of the heavy traffic in the daytime,” source said.

He said that the drivers often lose control over their vehicles and don’t maintain lane discipline whatsoever. People feel it’s ‘intimidating’ especially since they flout traffic rules with impunity. The traffic department has made new rules for relief of transporters but their rules create problems for common masses.
