NBCC asked to submit monthly progress report of works in Jammu

JAMMU, Sept 28: Government has directed the National Building Construction Corporation (NBCC) to submit monthly progress report to Urban Development Department. Further Economic Reconstruction Agency (ERA), National Building Construction Corporation (NBCC) and other agencies have been directed not to take new works before completion of the ongoing works.

Sources said that Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand has passed directions after reviewing various ongoing urban development works in the city. They say that officials from PHE and R&B department have submitted that non-adherence to deadlines has slowed down their plan for blacktopping and repairing the water supply infrastructure.

“They will have to submit regular reports and till the existing works are completed, no new work will be taken up”, said Deputy Chief Minister, Tara Chand.
As per the data, despite placing it on priority, only 32.88 kms (36 per cent) work of laying lateral sewers (connecting different localities with main sewer line) out of 90.74 km has been completed. About 10 percent of main sewer line is also still incomplete.

According to the officials, slow pace of work is mainly because of lack of coordination between Economic Reconstruction Agency (ERA), Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) and National Building Construction Corporation (NBCC), main agencies implementing various state and centrally sponsored scheme for urban development.

There has been allegation against the central agency that it has failed to meet the deadlines, while many of the projects have not been completed upto the mark.
The deadline for the completion of the sewerage laying project has already been extended till May 2013, as most of the works are running behind schedule, creating lot of problems for the common man.

Many parts of the city particularly, Subash Nagar, Janipur, and Sarwal look like a war zone, with dug up roads and heavy machinery at work, drivers have really tough time to reach their destination.

“Almost all the roads are in a deplorable condition but there seems to be no end to this digging. We hope that problems faced by the common man will end soon”, said Rakesh Gupta, a trader at New Plot.
