JAMMU, Sept 15: Denied their salaries for last six months, nearly 12000 daily wagers of Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department have threatened to suspend their work in case their salaries are not released immediately.

The workers include Consolidated Paid wagers (CP workers), Need Base Workers, Daily Rated Workers. At the moment daily wagers are given Rs.110 per day.

This despite the fact that government had assured in the floor of the House that all the daily rate workers will be given salary every month. In February 2011, state government had issued a notice (circular number 4) according to which they had agreed to pay uniform salary of Rs.110 per day to all the daily wagers.

Sources said that despite assurances by Minister for PHE, Taj-Mohi-Ud-Din that pending dues of the daily wagers will be cleared, but so far thousands of daily wagers across the region have not been paid their wages.

Talking to TNI General Secretary of daily wagers Kartar Singh said that from the last year the state government has not released their salary due to which they are facing a lot of problems. He said that their families are also suffering. Many times they were met with concerned authority but they have nothing done.

“Also many times hold demonstrations against what they termed government’s halfhearted approach in fulfilling their demands under the banner of All Jammu and Kashmir Daily Wagers Union (JKDWU),” he added. He mentioned that every time the demonstrations against the government for its failure to redress their grievances.

He further said that the, recently there Power development department create 3000 thousands posts for regularization of their daily wagers. Now we are demanding to state governments as well as PHE department don’t discriminations with PHE daily wagers. The department will make a proposal to regularization of PHE daily wagers and send to higher authority for approval.

When contacted, Chief Engineer Ashwani Sharma said that, recently they have held a meeting and discussed the issue. The department is making a proposal to get their wages cleared and it has been sent to higher authorities for approval. The higher authority assured to us, they readdress the problems as shortly.

He further said that we are not doing anything like PDD department for regularization of daily wagers of PHE department. The basic work of regularization of higher authority, we can’t say anything.
