Govt asks authorities to stop fresh unauthorised colonies
Nitesh Sangral9/21/2012 7:24:49 PM
JAMMU, Sept 21: As flash floods have wrecked havoc in several residential colonies during this monsoon in the city, Revenue authorities have decided to come down heavily on unauthorized and illegal colonies coming up on outskirts of the City.

Sources said that action is also likely to be taken against the private builders who are using illegal methods to establish colonies, which have not been approved by the government.

Sources said that a number of colonies have been constructed unauthorisedly and illegally, some of them even in `khuds’ and nullahs or on their banks, which could endanger the lives of the people.

These colonies had suffered extensive damage in the flash floods as the flood water didn’t find any way to pass and entered into houses of the people.

While the Government, for the time being, might not go after already raised unauthorized or illegal colonies, it has already issued directions to the authorities to ensure that no unauthorized or illegal colony comes up anywhere in the City or the outskirts.

However, this was not the case with all colonies. Flood water had also entered into many legal and authorized colonies due to failure of the concerned authorities to take pre-emptive measures in the Monsoon season.

The similar guidelines would also be applicable for raising new colonies all over the State, sources said, adding that no permission would be granted for construction of new colonies on the banks of any river or nullah or conversion of ‘khuds’ into the colonies as it would stop flow of water during the Monsoon season. However, the cases would vary in case of ownership of ‘khuds’.

According to sources, the Government has also asked Economic Re-construction Agency (ERA) to take over all major nullahs in Jammu City and outskirts by the end of this year. Acquisition notices for acquiring land on both sides of the nullahs are being issued shortly, sources said, adding that this would prevent raising of colonies or construction of houses along nullahs.
