JAMMU, Oct 28: In just six month 8000 people have sought psychiatric help from the special OPDs opened by the health department in the district hospitals in Jammu region under a centrally sponsored programme. Sources from the Health Department said that such a large number of patients with range of psychiatric ailments are a worry for the doctors as many of them have history of suicidal tendencies. With depression and anxiety related disorders among the youth emerging as a major concern, health department had started mental health OPD clinics at five district hospitals of region and figures are indeed depressing. For implementing the programme, Banglore based National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) had trained nearly a dozen doctors who were then posted at Government Hospital Gandhi Nagar, Jammu, District Hospitals of Udhampur, Rajouri, Kathua and Samba, Poonch and Rajouri. It has emerged during the study that mainly unemployment, financial stress, high expectations of parents from their children in examination; incompatibility in relations between married couples and other social factors has emerged as major reason for mental problems in the state. As per the data in year 2008-2009, 122 youth had committed suicide while in 2009-2010, 118 youth committed suicide across the state. During 2011-12 about 220 cases of suicides were reported from the state. Dr. Shamim, Nodel Officer of National Mental Programme in J&K said, “From the medical point of view, doctors are dealing with the patients with depression, post-traumatic stress disorders, anxiety related disorders”. “Earlier there was stigmata attached for visiting a psychiatrist but now people are seeking medical help. With the help from Union Health Ministry, more doctors are being trained at national institutions”, official claimed. The step, as per the officials was taken following serious concern shown by the various NGOs and social organisations regarding abrupt rise in the suicidal tendencies among the younger generation in recent past. |

It is penitent to mentioned, Minister for Health Bali Bhagat assured Upper House that the Principal Secretary H&ME Department handed over the proposal for increase of 133 PG seats in GMC, Srinagar and 107 PG seats in GMC, Jammu, as one time increase in Medical Colleges of State for the year 2018-19. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, through its communication dated March 6, 2018, has conveyed its approval for admitting 15 students in GMC Jammu and 29 for Srinagar for 2018-19.
