JAMMU, Sept 01: The city is turning into a dreaded place for women as crimes against fair sex is seeing rapid rise in recent past. Burn cases and poison cases have increased in last few year. Within last two months around 75 cases were registered which were directly connected to violence against women.

Pertinently, as 1100 cases were registered in different police stations in 2010-11. The cases related to dowry harassment have almost doubled. , nearly 605 cases have been reported in the Women Cell of the police. As per the data, about 400 domestic violence cases have been sorted out after mutual compromise while FIR has been registered in 14 cases at Women Cell, Canal Road. Nearly 191 cases are pending before the court for hearing.

Police Source said that the protection of women in the city under in question, In the last two months, the women look at cases involving suspicious deaths of around 16 newly married, 34 women consumed poisonous substance and hospitalized and 23 women hospitalized due to burns cases.

He further said that the state police has completely failed to stop the crime against women. In the daily routine two or three women are being admitted in Government Medical College Hospital (GMCH), Jammu for treatment mostly related burns or swallowing of toxic substance.

“Surprisingly, the data pertains only to Jammu District, this shows that an average of two and more women are assaulted and family disturbance. Apparently, this figure will increase significantly, “he added. It takes time to put the record in these cases and police have not taken strict action to investigation of these case.

Source said that a woman on condition of anonymity, hospitalized said the relation between me and my husband is not good from the last sometime and it is at the stage from where have to take some serious step.

He further said that total of 9 women died in August month and 7 women died from swallowing a toxic substance. Few days back 28 Ritu Devi died during hospital treatment.

When contacted Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Jammu Parbhat Singh, said that the police department have established a women cell, which is handle these cases very efficiently.
