Traffic Police goes soft on vehicles with tinted glasses

Nitesh Sangral
JAMMU, July 19: Although the Supreme Court and the Jammu and Kashmir High Court have banned the use of tinted glasses on vehicles in the interest of the civil society, the Traffic police have failed to implement the order of Hon'ble court in letter and spirit that amounts to contempt of the Court order.

The failure of traffic police can be gauged from the fact that hundreds of cars with tinted glasses were still plying on the city roads. Though, the police had started campaign against the tinted glasses immediately after the court order but within few days the entire spirit of cops vanished.

As per official sources, the priorities of traffic department are something else. It was pressure from media and judiciary that prompted the cops to go after vehicles with tinted glasses initially, sources further said. "The problem lies with VVIP vehicles, whenever cops catch a vehicle with tinted glasses, the response bangs from driver that vehicle belongs to VVIP and soon mobile call comes that demotivates the cops on duty. Had the administration and higher ups offered complete cooperation, the menace of tinted glasses have been completely wiped out", sources added.

It is pertinent to mention that the Court passed the order on a plea seeking complete ban on use of dark films on car windows, including the vehicles used by VVIPs, alleging that many crimes in cities were committed by people using such cars with tinted windows.

However, two months have passed but tinted glasses can be frequently seen on numbers of cars particularly VVIP vehicles.

According to Advocate Rohit Kapoor, who had filed the petition in High Court, the Honorable Court had given 4 week time to IG Traffic H K Lohia to implement the order. But after some days the IG Traffic was transferred. Thereafter, Court directed the new IG Traffic Muneer Khan and asked him to ensure removal of black films from all the vehicles.

“IG Traffic has sought four week time to remove black films from all vehicles in the state and in this regard submitted an Affidavit in the High Court. Almost two months have been passed but Traffic police failed to remove black films.

He further said that Traffic police violating the order of High Court as well as Supreme Court by not going tough against the vehicles with tinted glasses. Meanwhile, the next date of hearing in this case is July 24.
