Technical snag grounds traffic signals at Bikram chowk for 12 hours

JAMMU, Aug 6: Just two days after Electronic Traffic Signal Lights System (ETSLS) were thrown open at ten crossing in the city, technical snag today grounded the lights at Bikram Chowk.

Though the signals were made operational after ratification of the error, but it showed the plight of the newly installed system.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Traffic Signal Lights in the city were made functional after a long wait on Saturday when the Deputy Chief Minister accompanied by at least four other ministers inaugurated the signals in Jammu.

The concerned department claimed the traffic light project has been undertaken by the Jammu Municipal Corporation at a cost of Rs 250 lakh and out of the total of 30 lights installed, in the first instance 10 have been commissioned and rest would be dedicated to the city in a phased manner.

Official’s source said that the department has not fully prepared for start the traffic signals in the Jammu city. Because the some basic work of the traffic light systems are pending. The department has operated the signals is under pressure of government as well as Media.

“Due to technical fault the traffic lights stopped at some places such as Satwari, Main Stop and Vikram Chowk on Sunday night”. He also said that the light will take more time to properly blinking in the city.

Pertinently, the traffic officials also claimed that when the start in the city, the special traffic personnel deployed for guide the common masses about the rules, whereas traffic signals operated but unfortunate no one officials deployed in mentioned locations.

A Student Vikram Singh said that the people, who were waiting for the traffic lights anxiously, were seen struggling to cope up with the new system, especially when one has to negotiate between the mini-bus operators and auto-rickshaws known as habitual offenders in Jammu.

“The young generation seems to be pretty excited and every one of them wants to adhere to the system. It will take time for the people to adopt the new system. They are here used to a free for all kind of situation” he added.

When connected Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Traffic, Manmohan Singh also admits that in the signals were some problems but the technician sought out the problems now the signals properly working.
