JDA fails to identify land despite directions by government
Nitesh Sangral
JAMMU, Aug 24: Despite directions of government, Jammu Development Authority (JDA) has failed to identify space near General Bus Stand for the construction of Multi-Parking building to provide parking space for the buses and other vehicles to curb daily congestion.

Sources said that Authority has slowed down the process after the opposition from the shopkeepers who are against their eviction and also due to the lack of funds at the disposal of JDA for the construction of four such buildings in different parts of the city.

City has become so congested particularly during the Darbar move that people had to search for, were to park there vehicles. At drivers have created their own unauthorized parking and leave their four or two wheelers there during the night hours.

Recently with management of rising vehicles become a nightmare for the administration in the rapidly growing urban centers of Jammu and Kashmir, government had decided to formulate a comprehensive City Transport Policy for scientific management of the vehicles.

Four multi storied parking buildings were proposed to be established at Bus Stand, Super Bazzar, Doctors lane and Kachi Chawni.

It is pertinent to mention here that city is facing huge problem of parking, as with addition of thousands of vehicles in past 20 years, no major defined places have been established keeping in view the expansion.

“The project has been put under cold storage as there is no coordination within the officials. The problem is that it is a huge project and need a major investment”, said a senior officer from JDA.

The directions were given by Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Ali Muhammad Sagar in February this year during a high level meeting to review the modernisation plan of the Bus stand, which is in dilapidated condition as no major developmental work has been taken in past many years, despite that fact that it hosts thousands of passengers daily.

It was further directed that officials will study the models of various newly constructed and renovated bus stands in the country before the modernisation plan is initiated.
