Without electricity, awareness, traffic lights in city non-functional

JAMMU, July 15: Though the traffic lights have been installed by the administration in across the city, but no step has been taken to create awareness among the people.

Further there has been delay in throwing open the traffic lights as it has missed the June 18 deadline already.

It is pertinent to mention here that the traffic department and Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) have identified 30 locations where install the lights but the departments have installed total 20 traffic signals in different locations in the city.

Taking to TNI Power Development Department (PDD) Chief Engineer Shanaz Goni said that the concerned department has approached them for provide the 30 kilowatt electricity to traffic lights. She further said that the PDD department has not given permission till now and is still discussing it. "We are already facing shortage of power and that is why we have not given any power to these traffic lights". Goni said.

Officials source said that the Power Development Department is not agree to functioning traffic light now because they informed the already state is suffering power crises. The PDD is appeal to the concerned department to delay the functioning of traffic lights in the city.

In the Jammu region the locations identified, which will get traffic signals are Satwari Chowk, Main Stop Gole Market, Green Belt Gandhi Nagar, Chattri Point, Bikram Chowk, Jewel Chowk, K C Crossing, Shakuntala Crossing, Medical College Crossing, Ambphalla, Canal Head, Bakshi Nagar Puli, Talab Tillo Chowk, BSF School Paloura, Radio Station Chowk, Library Chowk, Vigilance Rotary,
Parade Chowk, Ranbireshwar Temple, Shalamar Chowk, Indira Chowk, Vivekananda Chowk, Shaheedi Chowk, Panama Chowk, Janipur Chowk, Roop Nagar, High Court, Kunjwani, Narwal and Bathindi Chowks.

Further under the project, 60 junctions of Jammu will be covered for installing Traffic Signal Lights in two phases. In the first phase, about 30 main crossing of Jammu city from Kunjwani to Nagrota have been identified by Traffic Department for installation of traffic lights. But interestingly in the Kunjwani there is not install the traffic light at present.

When contacted Inspector General of Police Traffic (IG), Muneer Khan said that the department has not fixed date of start traffic signals in the state. He said the next 15 days the traffic signals will function.
