Nitesh Sangral
JAMMU, July 4: Government Medical College (GMC) Hospital Jammu, was hogging the newspaper headlines over past few days over the monkey occupying the hospital bed, which has exposed the condition of health sector in one of the premier medical colleges in the state.

Though the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also tweeted on social networking site about the incident saying, "I am shocked by the images of the monkey in GMC hospital Jammu. Before I say anything I owe it to my concern Minister to first ask him to explain.

But the question is how are the hospitals in our state being run at a time when crores are being spend for the improvement of health sector in Jammu and Kashmir.

It is pertinent to mention here that the state already has a bad reputation when it comes to healthcare, and an incident like this is likely to make dent on its image further. Just a couple of months back, the shameful death of infant death Srinagar hospital has further embarrassed the government and Minister for Health Sham Lal Sharma and Minister for medical and Technical education, R.S Chib. Before this incident these monkeys used to snatch fruits and other things from people visiting the hospital. Number of biting cases were also reported in past few years, but the authorities had failed to take any action.

Source said that in the emergency ward of the GMC in Jammu, a monkey occupied one of the beds, which not only scarred the patients visiting the hospital but threat is infection is also a major issue. “The monkey may have sneaked to avoid the heat, but it slept in the hospital for more than three hours before it was taken away. Interesting thing was the authorities did not take any action despite repeated pleas by the people”, he disclosed.

A patient said that he came to show his child, but after seeing the situation, he feels that hospital should be declared a zoo. "Nobody from administration is around, dogs and monkeys are everywhere. Any relative got fruits for the patient, but the monkey snatched it and run from the spot but the concerned authorities are never taken any action in this regard," he added.
