After failing to nab thieves, wrath of police on poor traders in Jeevan Nagar

JAMMU, June 21: After failure to arrest the mysterious people involved in the thefts cases Nai Basti area of city, police is harassing innocent vegetable vendors, due to which they are shifting their business to Nai Basti and Dignania area.

In recent past there has been increase in the theft cases in the city particularly in posh colonies of the city and despite efforts by the police, they have failed to nab the people involved in these incidents.

Source said that some days back, the police begun to harass some vegetable vendors charging them for involvement in the theft cases in Jeevan Nagar area. The police have claimed that some outsider (outside of State) people involved increasing thefts or chain snatching cases.

“The vendors are feeling scared now and are shifting to rural area. Now the people are facing probnlem as they are not been able to buy vegetables and other essential items. It is wrong on the part to harass the poor people”, said a local resident, Sham Lal.

Bittu Ram resident of Jeevan Nagar said that the police is harassing the vegetable vendors to hide its failures. The vendors are not selling the vegetables in the locality due to these things the people of area as well as vendors are facing problems. The people have gone to purchased vegetable after covered long distance from the home. They have gone to vegetable mandi Nai basti or Satwari.

A vendor namely Raju said that near 15 to 17 days ago two police personnel visited him and started questioning him in alleged theft and chain snatching case in the area and he was quite scared. He said he told to police official he have don’t know about mentioned cases. They police officials said to him don’t look in the areas next times.

Hence the vendors are not come in the area for sell their fruits and vegetables. He also said that without his fault the police only harassed him.

When contacted Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jammu Parbhat Singh said that he will take a look into the allegation but said that in most of the cases people from outside the state working and living in the city are involved in theft and chain snatching cases.

He further said that the police has launched special anti theft campaign in the city to nab the people involved in thefts and chain snatching cases.
