Just week left for Baisakhi: De-sliting process of Canals still not completed

JAMMU, Apr 07: The irrigation department has failed to clean up the canals on time leading to scarcity of water for farmers in many areas of Jammu region.
They say now days the season of sowing the vegetables in the rural areas but they are not getting water through the canals. Because the cleanliness work of canals have been not completed not yet.


All the canals of the Jammu region are in dilapidated condition due to the presence of garbage and other waste material as a result the farmers have to suffer. The reason is that department has failed to clean up the canals on time forcing which has led to water crisis in many areas of the region.


officials source said that the 60% people of the state are totally dependent on the agriculture whereas the canals is the life line of the farmers community, the canals which caters to the irrigation needs of the large number of farmers in the Jammu region.


Moreover, it is a sowing season and in next few days farmers will be sowing seeds of vegetables and the process of de-silting has not been undertaken as a result of which the farmers have been left at the mercy of God.


Farmers are dependent on the agriculture as its is source of income for thousands of famalies and these days are very important keeping in view the approaching sowing season. “Delay in timely de-silting of canals has resulted in non-availability of water for irrigation which will harm the crops”, said a farmer Balwinder Singh.


Speaking on the issue Chief Engineer Irrigation, Ashwani Sharam said this year the water of canals was closed on January 18. “This is the main reason why the cleanliness work is going till date. Gour agencies are involved in the cleaness work and it is expected to completed in next few weeks”, Sharma said.


He said that department makes a report and submits same to the concerned authorities. The authorities published a tender notice and after passed trender the department beings his work of cleanliness of water. He informed that wherever required the department clean the canals, as there is no fixed time for that.
