JAMMU, Apr 06: From last five years (2005 to 2010) crime related incidents have shown constant rise in Jammu and Kashmir.


According to the report of Crime Branch Jammu and Kashmir Police, state has recorded 34.2 per cent crime rate in past five years. Since 2005, 22850 case were recorded, which has increased to, 25272 in 2010, showing increase of 2422 cases. The state has witnessed murders besides 896 kidnapping and abduction cases in last few years.


Last year’s Union Home Minister released a report the state has witnessed 11869 crimes under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) while the numbers of total cognizable crimes of the year stands at 23223. As per the report, none of the murders reported in the state were related to militancy. Besides, in most cases, illegal or unlicensed weapons were used. 87 killings were carried out using illegal weapons while in 77 cases, murderers used unlicensed weapons. In rest of the cases, licensed weapons were used.


According to CBI report reveals that 896 kidnapping and abduction cases have been reported in the state as against 2009 when 873 such cases were reported. The 896 cases, 840 are related to women. Moreover, there have been 2622 crimes against body or attack on individuals by criminals including 711 attempted murders.


There has been a significant decline in the cases of sexual harassment against women with only 262 cases reported in 2010 as against the 371 of 2009. On the contrary, 1038 molestation bids have been reported in 2010 as against 972 cases in 2009. Besides, 744 cases related to family homicide and domestic violence has also been reported last year. This includes nine dowry deaths and 211 cases of cruelty by husband or other relatives against women.


Officials’ sources said that the 494 deaths due to negligence were also reported. The state has also witnessed 3983 crime cases against property besides 2393 cases against public order. The number of arson cases in 2010 stands at 224. The state has witnessed 2631 automobile thefts besides 1500 cases of robbery and burglary.


While there has been no communal killing in the state, it has recorded 2169 riot cases, 266 bodies were recovered in 2010, but nothing has been said as to how they got killed though inquest proceedings are underway. While there are very less number of rape cases reported in Kashmir, in Jammu province, 96 cases have been reported with 36 each in Jammu and Rajouri and 20 in Poonch.
