Various events mark international day against drugs

JAMMU, June 26: On the International Day against ‘Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking’, number of organisation organized awareness programmes and camp at district and state level.

With Jammu and Kashmir falling in high risk catogery, it assumes significance as in recent past government is making every effort debar youth from taking to the drugs.

Pertinently, the history of that day The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) leads the international campaign aimed at raising awareness of the major problem that illicit drugs represent to society and especially to young people. The goal of the campaign, which runs from 2007 to 2009, is to inspire people and mobilize support for drug control.

In connection with this day few days ago the Department of Student Welfare (DSW), University of Jammu, organized an Exhibition of posters making through which the department aware the students and general public about the side effect of using drugs.

On the day Dean Students Welfare, N K Tirpathi has urged the younger generations to have no place for drugs in life and fulfill their dreams and aim of life march a head with their books. He also said that use or the production of drugs is a culpable offence.

The students gave many interesting captions on the posters including 'Stand Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, 'Don't let these Drugs smoke away your life, save life, No to Drugs, Yes to life.

National Students Union of India (NSUI) frontal wing also launches a state wide programme to eradicate the menace of drug addiction in the state.

NSUI state president Dr. Abdul Rashid Choudhary said that the programme consists of three stages in such the survey, awareness campaigns and eradication and rehabilitation.

He said that the preliminary survey has been conducted in the five districts of Kashmir namely Srinagar, Ganderbal, Baramulla, Anantanag and Shaopian.

Beside this a mass rally of students drawn from various government and private educational institutions in Udhampu also organised to mark the International day against dug abuse and illicit trafficking.

Doctors' "negligence" claims 2 lives
