Road digging menace continue to haunt Jammu

Nitesh Sangral
JAMMU, June 13: Despite clear directions from the government to its departments and private agencies to desist from digging up newly constructed roads for at least three years for any purpose, the regulation is being openly violated at many places in Jammu.

At various localities, the workers hired by the telecom companies are busy in digging the roads to lay new telephone lines, an annual affair taken up after every Darbar move giving an ugly look to the city.

“It seems there is some inherent problem in our system which does not want to see clear roads. Many residents said that at times it seems government is preparing city for the war and digging trenches to fight the enemy. It’s frustrating at times to see the clear roads being destroyed by using JCB and labourers, residents feel helpless to see the destruction and for months they have to face the potholes left by the work. “You will not find a place where the work of digging is not going on.

This results in traffic jams besides causing a lot of problems for pedestrians who walk through the area. Problem is more during the evening hours,” said Sunil Sharma a local resident. People allege that the construction agencies leave the dug up roads for several months, putting the locals to great inconvenience.

The dug up roads also become a cause of accidents. “An entire portion along Janipur to Bantalab road has been dug up which has also resulted in frequent traffic congestions. Same is the condition in other parts of Jammu,” said Kapil Soodan another resident.

The basic issue is why such thing is allowed and why agencies like Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) and Roads and Buildings Department (R&B) department remain silent over the whole matter. However, both the government agencies associated with giving approval pass on bucks to each other.

When contacted Joint Commissioner JMC, Babu Ram said that it is the Roads and Building (R&B) department which gives the approval and they have nothing to do with it. While the Chief Engineer R&B D.L Sharma refused to comment over the issue. “I am out of Jammu and at the moment cannot comment on the issue”, was his response when asked about the mess in the city.
