JAMMU, May 19: The menace of bovine smuggling is growing in the state, but it seems the police department is in deep slumber to deal with this illegal practices.

In one such case two days ago, Bari Brahmana police recovered 13 bovine animals but smugglers fled from the spot, putting question mark on the efficiency of the administration.

Sources said that, the smugglers continue smuggling bovine in the said areas, but when police officials deployed on ’Nakas’ checking the vehicles they run away from leaving their vehicles. Locals said that this is going on for last many months but there seems to be no immediate end to curb the menace.

“The few question also arise, how these smugglers know police raids on that places or areas and how can run away from the spot from last two months”, said a insider.

When contacted Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Samba, Ishar Ahmad Khan, said that the department is taking measures to deal with the menace.

“We have constituted special teams to deal with the situation and vigilance is being maintained across the region”, Khan said.

“The police arrested smugglers and recovered huge number of bovine animals daily reunite”, Khan added.

He further said that who smugglers run way from the spot the concerned police seized the vehicles, when the smugglers or their kin comes in concerned police station for release their vehicles from the police custody that times police arrested them.

It is pertinent to mention here that the bovine smuggling business going last many years in the rural areas, but now the spreading illegal trade quickly. According to official source some police officials also involved in this practice and get money from the smugglers. “The police officials also taking 'Hafta' from them and occasionally also conducted raids just for the name sake”, source said.

As per the police they flee before the police raid or ‘Naka’ checking leaving their vehicles and police only recovered bovines, he added’. Fascinatingly, many of the police officials avoid talking on these issues.
