Custodial death at Janipur................ Police post Again in this case justice would be denied to the victims family..................SI Jai Pal Singh, saved by the powerful police lobby

Nitesh Sangral

JAMMU, Jan 17: A day has passed and like other custodial deaths, people have begun to forget the pain and brutality which the poor victims suffer at the hands of police personnel, from those people whom we call our saviors. It has become a norm now in Jammu and Kashmir, that whenever there is any death at the hands of the police, administration immediately announce job for the victims family as PSO.

But no one asks the powerful police officials, why the killers get scot free, without having to face any punishment. Sub Inspector Jai Pal Sharma is a controversial officers and if the sources are to be believed there are cases of harassment against the officers when he was posted at Kanachak. But being close to some of the senior officers in the Police department, he had managed to save himself so far. Sources said there have been number of complaints against the officers by the people, but no action has been taken. “Yesterdays death has shown that how vulnerable the poor and common man is in the state, police can kill anyone without impunity.

Nobody knows when his turn will come”, said a officer. “He recently arrested a mason Sham Lal of Durga Nagar and Fruit Commission agent Sonu, from Chinore on the allegations of land grabbing despite the fact that both had valid registry of the said lands which are under the jurisdiction of Police Post Chinore”, said a source. Earlier during his posting as IO in Police Station Domana, he had scuffle with then SHO and there was much arguments between the two, but due to his reach no action was taken against him. Similarly a poor vendor died under mysterious circumstances at the Janipura police station on Saturday night, while police says that he died after swallowing a capsule but family alleged he died because of police torture.

Police said Vijay, wanted in a theft case, was evading arrest for the past one month. As he was hiding at Katra, police took the help of his two friends to apprehend him. The tragedy is that what will happen to the family of the poor Vijay as he was the only bread earner for the family. He is survived by wife Geeta Devi and three children. “We have lost everything and we never think that culprits would receive punishment. Common man have no say in this state and added to this if they are poor”, Geeta said. Interestingly, police department SHO and Sub Inspector Jaipal Sharma Janipur, has been attached to District police Lines (DPL).

Police department said inquiry is going on. Deputy Commissioner (DC) Jammu, Sanjeev Kumar said that if it is proved that any of the officials is involved in the incident strict action would be taken against him. “We have also made a team to investigation entire case and led by Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Sheetal Nanda, she will handle the case”, DC said. DC Jammu said these things but according to source some officials try to press the facts and divert the case.
