JAMMU, Jan 16: It seems that a total ‘Goonda Raj’ is prevailing in region as just within a month another custodial killing has rocked Jammu. A 35 year old man Vijay Kumar son of Milakhi Ram was allegedly killed in custody of men in Khaki at Janipur police station.
The incident came to light around 4 am, when a flying police party took the body to the mortuary at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) here.

A resident of Bajwal near Raipur, Satwari, locals allege that he was picked by the police party from his home and they came to know about the death in the morning. Vijay was running a small shop at Sabaji Mandi, Satwari and was feeding his family which include two sons and a daughter.

Soon after the news reached the village, people came out in large number and blocked the road while shouting slogans against the police and administration. They burnt tyres on the road and demanded immediate arrest of the police personnel involved in the incident.
“We demand an detailed inquiry in the incident and suitable steps should be taken against the officers involved in the incident”, said a resident.

Geeta Devi, wife of the deceased said, “Without even telling us the reason, a police party picked up my husband from the house on December 22 last year and today sent his body.”
Family members alleged that a police party came in civil dress and picked him from the home. Meanwhile villagers held a protest against the administration and alleged that police is trying to hush up the matter ignoring their protest.

“We have lost our loved one and police is responsible for the same. We expect nothing from administration as they will like earlier cases will make every effort to save the culprits”, people alleged.
Tempers ran high in the area as people said that police is totally apathetic towards the common man and people are facing harassment daily on the name of security.

“We feel insecure and are afraid as police may target us now to silence our voice”, said Geeta Devi.
Meanwhile soon after the incident, Revenue Minister Raman Bhalla reached the spot and assured the family members and protesters that an detailed investigation would be carried out in the incident. He also announced the one member of the family will be recruited as SPO in the police.

Meanwhile police claimed that Vijay Kumar was involved in the theft case and police team had arrested him last night from the Katra areas. They say that Vijay eat capsule and after which his condition deteriorated forcing them to shift him to Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu. Police claims that he was arrested in different theft cases and many cases were already pending against him.

Meanwhile, a board of doctors conducted the postmortem and handed over the body to the legal heirs to perform its last rites. As the body was taken to the village, a large number of people turned up and blocked the road, after throwing stones and burning tyres there.

It is pertinent to mention here that on December 16 last year a 40 year old man identified as Manoj Kumar of Reasi district was allegedly tortured in police custody who had later died at GMC Jammu. Later people had thrashed the one of the policemen in a fit of anger.

Police stations are notorious for custodial killings in Jammu and Kashmir and there have been incidents when the people some involved in petty crimes have been killed in cold blood.
