Brain Drain affecting the GCET College, as teachers leaving for better options

Nitesh Sangral

JAMMU: Its not only the lack of infrastructure which mars the Government College for Engineering and technology (GCET), the ‘Brain Drain’ in recent years is slowly affected the functioning of the college.
It is pertinent to mention here that Government has sanctioned 71 posts for GCET College in 1996 and only 40 members joined their duty at that time. Officials said that due to lack of incentives and other facilities there, only 28 faculty members are working now and twelve had left the jobs and joined other organizations even at lower grade pay scales.
Sources said that despite the prestigious institute, the GCET has failed to provide proper facilities to staff members, putting career of hundreds of students at stake.
Even the college does not have proper infrastructure to conduct the classes and most of the students are completely fed up with the apathy of the government which claims to investing in infrastructure development of technical colleges.
According to official source, the GCET College not have permanent Principal and government only advertised post one time in year 1997, they have not further published the vacant posts.
He further added that the employees recruitment process was started about 15 year back and till now they have been able to fill the vacancies as few people of showing interest. They still are working on same post and haven’t got any benefits of promotions besides recommendations of 6th Pay Commission.
Recently during a workshop organised at college, Minister for Higher Education Abdul Gani Malik has assured that he will ensure that posts are filled. “We will try to do our best. We are trying our best to provide quality staff so that student don’t have to suffer”. He, however, said that rules have been framed and sent to ARI Department for approval which is likely very soon.
Interestingly, the students of the College were suffering due to lack of basic facilities including hostel facility, and practical equipments even there is no manpower of the new campus. The students visit to other colleges for their particles work. Principle of the college is also Non-technical.
