Jammu, Nov 18: Cancer cases are increasing at an alarming rate in Jammu and Kashmir, as four to five cases of cancer are reported in Government Medical College and Hospital Jammu on an average daily, but efforts to deal with the disease have been sluggish.

It is pertinent to mention that over 10 lakh new cases of cancer are diagnosed every year in India. However, due to late diagnosis, over 7 lakh people die of the diseases each year. Indian Council of Medical Research (IMCR) shows that India is likely to have over 17.3 lakh new cases of cancer and over 8.8 lakh deaths due to the disease by 2020.
As per data, the State has an estimated 29841, 30855, 31899 reported cases of cancer for the year 2012, 2013, and 2014 respectively and similarly, the estimated number of cancer patients' deaths for the year 2012, 2013 and 2014 are 4862, 5028 and 5196 respectively. ICMR reports that till August this year, 16, 480 patients with malignancies have been registered in Kashmir compared to 11, 815 cases in 2014.
In the state, the three top cancers are lung, head and neck and cancer of mouth due to tabacoo consumption, sedentary lifestyle, fatty diet, TN, Hepatitis B, HIV," told Medical Oncologist Dr Nadeem Shoket during media interaction in Jammu. Dr. Shoket added that most of human beings are susceptible to 200 varieties of cancer and 15 percent of cancer is hereditary.
He further added that the cancer is on rise every year in the state and it is matter of concern. "We have to deal with large number of people who are detected with Lung, stomach, throat and cervical cancer", said Dr Nadeem. He appealed to the people -"Don't smoke as it may cause cancer".
Official sources told that patients of cancer in the state suffer due to the absence of latest treatment facilities and are left without proper care.

Doctors' "negligence" claims 2 lives
