Crores wasted on unplanned irrigation schemes

Nitesh Sangral JAMMU, July 9: The lift irrigation schemes that irrigate 22.83 thousand hectare of cultivable land in the state have been executed in an unplanned manner and are lingering on for more than 20 years in many cases. The irrigation potential created has not been fully utilised, adversely affecting the contribution of the lift irrigation schemes. The construction work and maintenance of these schemes is vested with the state Irrigation and Flood Control Department. As per official records, the schemes irrigate 7 per cent of the cultivable land in the state. Scrutiny revealed that the department concerned did not frame any perspective plan with regard to the construction work under these schemes. Various schemes were taken up without setting priorities and as a result a number of schemes remained incomplete despite being under construction for the past between 20 and 26 years. For providing irrigation facilities to 32 villages with a command cultivable area of 12...

Mismanagement derails Amarnath yatra arrangements of administration

Nitesh Sangral JAMMU, July 5: The recent chaos which the city witnessed due to the heavy influx of the unregistered Amarnath yatris has exposed the poor measures taken by the administration to deal with the yatra. For whole three days, there was total disarray in the city and along the national highway, which saw long traffic jams due to the stopping of the vehicles by the police to stop the unregistered pilgrims towards Kashmir. Sources said that it seems there is no coordination between various agencies who have been entrusted to run the yatra smoothly in the state. The state government and SASB have earlier claimed to provide the pilgrims each and every possible requirement but the ground zero situation seems to be different from what it is claimed. Even the city traders are not providing their guests the friendliness behavior as they are engaged in taking money from out of the state pilgrims. It is pertinent to mention here that before the commencement of the yatra the g...

One such case busted about a fortnight ago with the arrest of a woman from Janipura on the disclosure of a minor girl whom she was alleged to have forced into prostitution, depicts the deep roots of the sex mafia, in which high and mighty are involved. Nitesh Sangral JAMMU, July 1: Recently Jammu University authorities had apprehended two agents for selling readymade Affidavits to the admission seekers and handed them over to police, but the administration of Government MAM College is doing exactly opposite job. The agents nabbed by JU guard were sitting outside the campus, but in MAM College affidavits are being sold inside the college building. The persons arrested by police on the complaint of JU authorities had been booked by Gandhi Nagar police under Section 420. But, the Principal of MAM College didn’t learn any lesson and went a step ahead by authorizing the Affidavit sellers to carry on their business inside the college building. Interestingly, the rate of Affidavit has been fixed at Rs 45 and the same could be easily had at the rate of Rs 30 or 35 from outside. Though the accused have been arrested by the police while he was fleeing towards Kashmir, but it raises lot of question about the moral degradation of our society, which has long tradition of ‘Guru-Shiysha’ concept. Sources said that it could be a tip of the ice berg as there are number of people who are exploiting the innocent girls. However the concern is how to stop this menace which is like a curse on our society. A college student said that at times girls face mental harassment in shape of comments, sudden touch or lewd gestures from the teachers, but it is mostly ignored.
